CROWNS AND BRIDGES

A dental crown is used when a tooth is damaged or decayed. It prevents further breakdown and protects the remaining tooth structure. A crown can also improve the shape, appearance and alignment of teeth.

A dental bridge is a non-removable restoration which serves as an alternative way to replace missing teeth. It consists of two dental crowns that are placed over adjacent anchoring teeth to support the artificial crown replacing the missing tooth.

When is a dental crown recommended?

At Gentle Dental, we may recommend a crown to:

  • Replace a large filling when there is not enough tooth remaining

  • Protect a weak tooth from fracturing

  • Restore a fractured tooth

  • Attach a bridge

  • Cover a dental implant

  • Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth

  • Protect a tooth that has had root canal treatment

When is a dental bridge recommended?

A bridge may be recommended when you are missing one or more teeth. The gaps left by missing teeth will eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces, resulting in a bad bite. The imbalance caused by missing teeth can also lead to gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.

A bridge will span the space where the teeth are missing, and is permanently fixed to the adjacent teeth or dental implants surrounding the empty space. Called abutments, these teeth serve as anchors for the bridge. A replacement tooth, called a Pontic, is attached to the crowns that cover the abutments.

How we manufacture dental crowns and bridges

At Gentle Dental, all our crowns and bridges are made to Australian standards, at a state-of-the-art laboratory in Brisbane. This way we can be sure of the quality of the product, and guarantee its construction, strength and reliability.

What are dental crowns and bridges made of?

Dental crowns can be constructed from a variety of high-grade materials including gold and metal alloys, acrylic, porcelain or ceramic. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. However, alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth. Alternatively, porcelain bonded to a metal shell can be used to create a crown that is both both strong and attractive.
